Other than the clothes and matching outfit, there are lots of accessories needed when fly fishing. A few of these accessories look as if odd, but whenever one pushes way to the waters, it is essential to bring all the devices and equipment with them.
One of the fly fisherman’s basic attire is the fly fishing vest that has lots of huge pockets. One may opt to place a piece of sheepskin on the front of the vest so as to have other flies within reach. A spring-laden retractable reel that is connected to the vest is also needed to secure a couple of nail cutters. These are quite useful when clipping loops or ties. It is also possible to fasten a scrap of rubber for tidying up leaders. Preferably, the vest must have a huge back pocket to hold a fluffy rain coat. Certain vests have a loop at the back of the neckline as well wherein the net can be affixed to keep it secluded.
Choosing fly boxes is quite crucial so be careful in doing so. It must have huge partitions wherein dry flies can be stored squashing their hackles. One or two boxes that have metal pins and foam on the inside layer are also needed. These can be used to store the wet flies, insect larvae, and streamers. It would also be helpful to have some small vials to store the dry flies after catching a fish.
It would also be better to have an extra spool for the reel that is already laden with backing and line. A fly fisherman also needs easy access to some spools of monofilament leader material, a leader case, a Swiss Army knife as well as a sharpening stone.
Whenever one goes fly fishing, it is also important to bring along insect repellent. Most insect repellent’s foremost ingredient is DEET, an industrial solvent that could harm the finish of the fly rod, wear down the polish on the fly line, wear off the leaders and break your rain coat. Regulate the use of insect repellent that has DEET and be cautious on what comes in contact with it. A lot of products in the market nowadays do not have DEET.
Polarized shades can aid the fly fisherman to see the fish and shield the eyes from the damaging rays of the sun. It can also be an advantage to carry a pocket flashlight that has a flexible neck. This could be really helpful for a lot of things such as changing flies during sundown or daybreak. Moreover, for practical reasons, a thermometer, a tiny chest of split shot, a knife that has various blades and a little first aid kit can be brought along while fly fishing.
A lot of fishermen usually bring a collapsible wading stick while fly fishing. This can help their grip while they wade in a heavy undercurrent or on a slippery, stony bottom. To net the fish, it will be useful to have a little cotton mesh net that has a tiny handle. If you plan to store your catch, it will be convenient to have a little sack or woven willow basket to store the fish.
